Varane requests pow-wow with Ancelotti

This has not been Raphael Varane's best season with Real Madrid. His meteoric rise was nipped in the bud at the end of last season when he suffered a knee injury. The centre-back returned to action some time ago but failed to regain his place in the starting eleven. On the one hand, the knee which underwent surgery frequently swells up meaning he can't play more than a few games in a row. On the other hand, he faces fierce competition in the shape of two unrivalled centre-backs: Ramos and Pepe. Varane's original intention was to start from scratch with Real next season but his plans could change now Chelsea has shown an interest. Before making a decision, he wants to talk to Ancelotti and find out where he figures in the Italian manager's plans for next season, or more to the point if he will continue to live in the shadow of Pepe and Ramos. Under Mourinho, Varane was king. He broke into the starting eleven following Pepe's injury, but his performance in both Clásicos - he scored at the Bernabéu and at the Camp Nou in the Copa del Rey - as well as against United left the whole of Europe dumbstruck. Everything went smoothly for the defender until he was injured just before the final of the Copa del Rey. He returned to France for surgery and from then on it was an uphill struggle. Since returning to action we have caught glimpses of his true potential but only very occasionally. Mourinho is tempting him with the promise of being the backbone of the Blues' defense.
